THE EPWORTH SLEEPINESS SCALE

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) is a simple, self-administered questionnaire, that is widely used by sleep professionals to help quantify a patient’s level of daytime sleepiness, which is often a sign of a sleep disorder.

How likely are you to doze off or fall asleep in certain situations? Use the following scale to rate your daytime sleepiness.

Read over each of the "situations," and then enter the number value in the yellow box that best describes your "Chance of Dozing."
Even if you have not done some of these activities, try to determine how they might affect you.

After you enter each number, press "Enter."  Your ESS Total Score will automatically be calculated.

(NOTE: If you do not see the ESS Chart, you will need to allow or run "Active X" by double-clicking the "Active X" box at the top of this page.)

Use these numbers to rate your "Chance of Dozing"

0 = No chance of dozing
1 = Slight chance of dozing
2 = Moderate chance of dozing
3 = High chance of dozing
